Hit the Ground Running Upon Graduation - Hallie Crawford

Hit the Ground Running Upon Graduation This is a recent press release Shannon Cherry, my PR guru extraordinaire, created for me. And an update on this, Hometown Dekalb has posted the article on their website. I was excited to be mentioned, a thank you to them. Atlanta (January 18, 2007) â€" There’s more opportunity and more choices than ever for college graduates, but according to Career Coach , MA, CPCC, the key for students to land a great job upon graduation and be prepared for life after school is to think and plan ahead. Surveys show employers plan to hire almost 18 percent more new college graduates from the class of 2007 than they did from the class of 2006 â€" and the jobs will go to the ones who are most prepared for the transition,” says Crawford, who helps graduates and their parents create a career plan. The growing demand for new graduates is a result of an increased demand for employers products and services; in addition, employeesâ€"baby boomersâ€"are retiring or nearing retirement age, and other employees are leaving organizations for new opportunities. Indications are that employers expect the good job market to continueâ€"or perhaps get better. “Most students don’t think about getting a job until close to graduation, which is a mistake,” says the career coach. “College students so frequently graduate unprepared for life after college, and with no sense of what they want to do. Many return to live with their parents although they’d actually prefer not to.” But just like finding the best college, developing a plan of action to find a career that suits one’s personality, interests and talents about a year prior to graduating. Crawford shares the following tips to get the plan started: Discover what’s important to you in life and in a career-determine your values and priorities. “Know yourself and what you think you want to do,” she says. “Now is the time to explore what you want to be when you ‘grow up’”. Gain inspiration from others who are working in a field they love. “Find a mentor by identifying successful people in your life and talk to them about what they did to get there,” explains Crawford. Get the experience. “A college degree is important to many employers, but real world experience is even more valuable,” she says. An internship will build many of the skills employers find lacking. “And it’s not just an opportunity to gain experience, but its also a setting for you to learn professional behavior, learn what it means to work in a team, and practice interpersonal communication,” Crawford explains. Think like an employer. “I know that a lot of money has been spent on your education, but the reality is employers want to see the skills, not your college life on a resume,” she says. She suggests highlighting what you can do on a resume, before ever discussing where you learned to do it. “Young adults and their parents spend a lot of time and money at school,” says Crawford. “Don’t waste the investment by not thinking of future plans.” Young adults, college students and their parents: Contact me today and schedule your complimentary 30 minute consultation. Resume Writing Agency - How Important Is It?

Resume Writing Agency - How Important Is It?For a lot of people, the resume writing agency can be a very valuable tool for obtaining employment. If you have decided to look for one, it is important that you find one that is legitimate. This way, you will not end up being taken advantage of or losing any money.Job ads will usually make reference to the availability of the job. However, most often it will also mention the pay rate. You should always take the job first and then see if you can negotiate it.It is also important to keep in mind that the pay rate in a particular job might not necessarily match the rate offered by a prospective employer. There are so many other things that go into it. In some cases, there might be things that are based on job requirements and other situations, such as location. The resume that you will produce will be a direct reflection of your abilities. You should try to remember thi s. If you get information that contradicts this, it is important that you write something that shows how you are able to fulfill the requirements of the job. 4-Day Workweeks Can Damage Health

4-Day Workweeks Can Damage Health Switching from a five-day to a four-day workweek often is touted as a benefit for people who want to build more flexibility into their schedule, but it can be a trap for people who already find themselves stretched too thin. Overworked Americans might inadvertently add to their workload rather than reducing it, research suggests. Adopting a condensed schedule, the thinking goes, forces workers to better prioritize their to-do lists, while dangling the promise of a three-day weekendâ€"every weekend!â€"to keep people motivated. For working parents, it’s often cited as a way to cut down on the high cost of childcare, and it gives people with long commutes a financial break on what they have to pay in gas, tolls, or public transportation every week. Ohio State University public health professor Allard Dembe noted in an article in The Conversation that people who regularly log extra hours are more likely to get hurt at work if they work in industrial settings, and more likely to suffer negative health effects “as a result of fatigue and stress that accumulate over a longer-than-normal working day.” The primary problem with the four-day week, he observed, “is that whatever work needs to be done, needs to get done in the same amount of total time. Despite wishes to the contrary, there are still only 24 hours in a day.” A body of other research referenced by the Harvard Business Review found that people working long hours have a harder time making good judgment calls, managing their emotions and communicatingâ€"necessities in just about any job today. The effects are especially pronounced on female workers, studies have found. “Womenâ€"especially women who have to juggle multiple rolesâ€"feel the effects of intensive work experiences and that can set the table for a variety of illnesses and disability,” Dembe warned. What’s more, if those last couple of hours every day in a four-day workweek aren’t as productive as they need to be, you could find yourself feeling pressure to come in on your day off to get more done, defeating the purpose of the four-day workweek in the first place. If you want to give a four-day week a shot, it’s important to set firm boundaries around your hours, allow yourself breaks to recharge your batteries, and avoid letting work creep back into your extra day off. MPA vs. MPP Which Is Right For Your Career - Work It Daily

MPA vs. MPP Which Is Right For Your Career - Work It Daily For those who wish to work in the public sector, there is often a question of which degree aligns closest to their career goals: the Master of Public Administration (MPA) or the Master of Public Policy (MPP). Both the MPA and MPP degrees have definite merits, but it can be confusing for a student to know which one to choose. Defining what each of these degrees are, the differences between them and the preferred degree for different career paths makes it significantly easier to reach a decision. What Is A Master Of Public Administration (MPA)? A Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree offers curriculum that focuses on preparing students for a management career in public service. Those who have earned this degree have gone on to work in all levels of federal, state, and local government agencies. Others have pursued careers in nonprofit agencies, international organizations, consulting firms, and even in the private sector. The MPA degree assures that students develop skills and techniques for best practices in implementing policies, projects, and programs to help them resolve societal problems. What Is A Master Of Public Policy (MPP)? The Masters of Public Policy (MPP) degree also prepares students to work on the issues society faces. The emphasis of this degree, however, is on evaluating and solving policy problems using quantitative and qualitative data. Those who have earned the MPP degree typically become leaders in all levels of government agencies, nonprofit agencies, international organizations, and consulting firms. Some also have careers as analysts or researchers in the private sector. MPA Vs. MPP - Differences And Similarities From this standpoint, the MPA and MPP degrees look quite similar. In fact, they have converged over the years where both degrees require many of the same core courses. The main difference between the two degrees is the MPA’s focus on administration and leadership with an emphasis on management. This degree focus includes studies in human resources, finance, management principles and information systems. To earn an MPA, students are usually required to have professional experience, such as internships or other working experience before the degree is granted. In contrast, the MPP focuses on evaluation and strategy with an emphasis on research and analysis. Coursework usually includes research methods, statistics, cost-benefit analysis, and economics. Most MPP programs do not require candidates to have relevant professional experience to be accepted into the program. MPA Vs. MPP - Which Is Better For Different Career Pathways? To determine whether an MPA or MPP degree is right for you, you only need to look at your goals. The MPA degree is more flexible for management positions outside of the public sector, even though it does maintain a focus on public service. Having that option available is a benefit if you aren't sure if government or nonprofit agencies are your true calling. The MPP, on the other hand, is more focused on public service and is ideal if you are certain that you would like a career in government, nonprofit agencies, or philanthropic institutions. As with any education decision, you should consider your own career goals before making a decision. If you still have questions, you can call an admissions specialist to discuss your future plans and the degrees available to you. This article was written by Inbound Marketing Coordinator Logan Harper on behalf of CAREEREALISM-Approved Partner, 2U â€" an education technology company that partners with institutions of higher education such as the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill which provides one of the best MPA programs in the US./em Have you joined our career growth club?Join Us Today!

The Gender Wage Gap Persists Where Are We Now And What Can We Do

The Gender Wage Gap Persists Where Are We Now And What Can We Do Actress Amy Adams recently declared that she doesnt want to be a headline anymore about pay equality, but with the gender pay gap persisting as we approach 2017, the sad reality is that this very quote did become a headline. Adams joins countless other celebrities and activists who are speaking out on the issue, yet despite increased media attention, unequal pay is still very much a glaring and present disparity.New research from PayScale.com helps to show the divisions between mens and womens pay and job levels in America, revealing that in 2015, the median pay for women welches $44,300, a whopping 77% less than the mens median of $58,000. In 2016, the gap actually increased, with the median for women dipping below 75% the corresponding mens figure ($44,800 vs. $60,200).The report analyzes data collected from more than 1.8 million workers between October 2014 and October 2016.There are two principal reasons of this eno rmous disparity. First, men tend to occupy significantly higher and more well-paid flecks than women. Second, even when differences in position and length of experience are accounted for, men enjoy somewhat higher pay than similarly situated women.PayScale also asked approximately 80,000 respondents whether they feel their gender has kept them from receiving a raise and/or promotion. Not surprisingly, only 3.5% of males but 18.5% of females answered in the affirmative.Gender Gaps in Job LevelAcross all age groups (those surveyed were between 20 and 65 years old), there is a higher percentage of women than men in individual contributor level jobs (the lowest job level included in the survey). That gap widens with age. For 20- to 25-year olds, 77% of men surveyed and 78.4% of women occupied such positions. However, by age 60-65, 44.5% of men and 60.6% of women continued to work at this level. As you might expect, the tables turn as the job level increases. The percentage of men occupyi ng higher level positions - whether manager or supervisor level, director level, or executive level - is higher than the percentage of females in those roles in nearly every single age group. While the disparities abflug out relatively small for 20- to 25-year-olds (21.1% of men and 19.6% of women were in manager or supervisor level jobs), they increase with age (40.5% men to 32.4% women for 40- to 45-year-olds). The gap is even more pronounced with executive level positions, with mens percentages more than doubling womens at both age 40 to 45 and 60 to 65.Gender Wage Gaps by Industry and by StateAcross every single industry included in the report (21 industries total), the median pay for men is higher than that for women. The wage gap is smaller in industries such as Educational Services and larger in industries such as Finance s a gender pay gap, but the severity differs. When the survey controls for position level and experience, the gap still persists in 48 states, significantly in some, though in Vermont and Connecticut, the survey indicates that women actually enjoy a very slight advantage over similarly situated men. Moving Forward While PayScale.coms findings are disheartening, we know that some companies are moving in the right direction. For example, Salesforce and Google are making concerted efforts to diminish the gender wage gap and are speaking publicly about their methods, which can inspire other companies to follow in their footsteps. Salesforce CEO Marc Beinoff put his companys reputation on the line when he publicly announced that he was conducting a compensation audit. When he found that there was in fact a gender wage gap at his company, he implemented a plan (with $3 million in funding) to resolve it.The gender wage gap is an issue close to our hearts at Fairygodboss, where our mission is to improve the workdistribution policy for women by increasing transparency regarding issues such as equal compensation for women and whether employers a re generally female-friendly. The first step toward diminishing the gap is making sure that people are well informed and able to knowledgeably participate in an open dialogue.Youcan help Fairygodboss bring transparency and attention to the gender pay gap by Fairygodboss is committed to improving the workplace and lives of women.Join us by reviewing your employer
